Ohio hunter ripped, killed bear proudly

Pacelle wrote in a blog entry on Monday that Bowmar is "so deeply disconnected from the suffering of an innocent creature that he felt free to yell and prance with joy as the life was spilling out of this innocent animal,"

In addition, Alberta Environment and Parks spokesman Tim Chamberlin called for the "archaic" practice of spear hunting to be banned. The proposal has been applauded by PETA.

The animal rights group said in a statement ,"Alberta officials are 100 percent right to condemn the cruel and deliberate fatal stabbing of a bear. The man, who boasted about his kill on YouTube, seems to lack any empathy at all—and PETA looks forward to seeing the government make good on its pledge to introduce a ban on this cruelty."

Bowmar, a former competitive javelin thrower, wrote in a statement that spear hunting gives the animal "the greatest chance of escape, considering our ethical killing range is within 10 yards." He also said that a spear "will kill an animal twice as fast as an arrow will.In fact, there a far fewer bears hunted and wounded with a spear versus bears hunted and wounded with a bow and arrow. Bowmar, who runs an Ohio-based fitness company wrote, “Statistically speaking, one would argue a spear is more of an ethical, humane weapon to hunt with than a bow."
