Ohio Special Election: Republican Claims Victory

Ohio on Tuesday was determining the year's concluding special election, a congressional faceoff that tested afresh the United States President Donald Trump's political clout and the appeal of his signature tax cuts.

Republican state Senator Troy Balderson in Ohio claimed victory over Democratic county official Danny O'Connor amid a tight congressional race in a district that has been in GOP hands since before the 31-year-old Democrat was born.

The outcomes will aid in deciding the political scenery and Trump's standing within his own party merely three months before the GOP defends its House and Senate majorities across the nation.

Ohio and Kansas voters joined those in Missouri, Washington, and Michigan, but only Ohio will be sending someone to Congress instantly.

In an election morning tweet, Trump said Balderson would make a "great congressman."

The victor will fill the seat which was previously held by a nine-term incumbent Pat Tiberi, who resigned to take a job with an Ohio business group.

Just 72 hours prior election day Trump himself campaigned at Balderson's side.

Respective electors casting ballots on Tuesday in suburban Westerville, both Republican and Democrat, said they saw little difference between the two candidates.
