In a notable political move that highlights the improving relationship between the TVK and the Congress, Chief Minister Vijay has given the only open Rajya Sabha position from Tamil Nadu to his partner, the Congress. This choice is seen as a significant advantage for the Congress, as their backing is essential for the stability of the TVK government's minority status in Tamil Nadu. Since the ruling party does not hold a majority, the five MLAs from Congress are vital for keeping the government afloat. This announcement followed a meeting between senior Congress figure Girish Chodankar and Vijay, which sparked talks about who the party might nominate for the Upper House seat. There are rumors that Congress strategist Praveen Chakravarty could be the one put forward as the party's candidate. Chakravarty is often credited with playing a significant role in forming the Congress-TVK alliance that transformed the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu. The vacancy in the Rajya Sabha was created when AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam resigned from Parliament after being elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Congress leaders have appreciated Vijay's choice, calling it a kind and politically important gesture. Congress MP Jothimani mentioned that having this extra seat would strengthen the party's representation in Parliament. "This will enhance Congress' presence in the Rajya Sabha to challenge the power of the BJP," she stated. The Congress had experienced a decrease in its parliamentary numbers after separating from the DMK and aligning with Vijay's party. Party leaders believe that this Rajya Sabha seat will not only boost their standing in the Upper House but also enhance collaboration between Congress and TVK leading up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and upcoming political challenges in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry.
However, this decision has faced criticism from the DMK. DMK spokesperson A. Saravanan claimed that the TVK is trying to avoid directly confronting the BJP in Parliament by letting Congress take on that responsibility. "The intention is for TVK to sidestep a direct clash with the BJP in Parliament, and that is why they have handed over that role to Congress," Saravanan explained. TVK leaders have firmly denied this accusation. A senior member of the party, who spoke anonymously, stated that the decision was meant to strengthen the alliance, not dodge political challenges. "There is no delegation of responsibilities here. We are reinforcing our partnership with Congress. What difference does having just one MP make? " the leader pointed out.
