Vijay Mallya arreseted in London

Embattled business fugitive Vijay Mallya, who is accused of defaulting on loans worth crores of rupees, has been arrested by the Scotland Yard on an extradition warrant today and will be presented before the Westminster Magistrates' Court

In February, the Indian government had handed over a formal to the United Kingdom High Commission to extradite Mallya, who is facing charges of money laundering and faces several arrest warrants.

Last year in March Mallya fled to the UK, after being pursued in courts by banks seeking to recover about Rs 9,000 crore owed by Kingfisher Airline.

India had cancelled his passport and asked the Britain government to deport him to India. But, the UK said that India’s deportation request was not covered under the UK laws that allowed visitors to stay back even if their passport was not valid any longer.

A special court for Prevention of Money Laundering Act had issued a Non-Bailable-Warrant against Mallya in April 2016. In January, a CBI court also issued a Non-Bailable-Warrant against him in an IDBI loan default case.

The arrest comes after a lot of effort put by the current Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The arrest also proves that no fugitives, who have fled the country, will be spared.
