WhatsApp is said to be developing a new optional subscription offer that will provide access to special features. This new plan is anticipated to emphasize better personalisation and tools for productivity, while keeping key messaging services free. Even though it is still in the works, initial information indicates that the Meta-owned messaging service will gradually roll out the subscription, with details on pricing, availability, and the final set of features yet to be finalized. Importantly, this new plan is different from the previously mentioned ad-free subscription for the Updates tab. The feature tracker WABetaInfo found a popup suggesting an optional subscription level on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.4.8, which is currently being released via the Google Play Beta Program. The feature is still being developed, which means it cannot be used, even after updating the app to the latest beta version.
WABetaInfo reports that the messaging app intends to launch a premium subscription that reveals more personalisation and productivity options. WhatsApp is likely to implement the plan using a waitlist system. Users who sign up for the waitlist will supposedly get a notice when the subscription is ready and can then decide whether to subscribe. A screenshot posted by the feature tracker shows that the initial group of premium features includes exclusive stickers, new app themes, and the ability to pin over three chats. WhatsApp is also believed to be developing a specific selection of chat ringtones and a feature to change the app icon, enabling users to pick from various new icon designs. These features are expected to give users greater control over the app's appearance.
WhatsApp might increase the premium features over time. The report mentions that additional features could be included as the company collects feedback, while some features currently being developed may be changed or dropped before they launch. Details on pricing have not been settled and are likely to differ by country. This subscription plan is stated to be distinct from the previously discussed ad-free option for the Updates tab, which is being created for users in Europe and the UK. That plan is aimed at eliminating ads and promoted channels from the Updates section. Both subscriptions are expected to remain optional.
WhatsApp has stated that the new paid options will not compromise user privacy. Essential messaging features and privacy protections are likely to stay free for all users, regardless of whether they opt for a subscription. The company has not provided a timeline for when the premium subscription will be available to the public.
