Senators Question About Russian Ties With Trump

Both Ohio senators raised questions on Friday about Russian ties with Trump administration just a day after the Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he would recuse himself from the Justice Department's investigation.

The sen. Rob Portman, R - Ohio, during a tour of the Jewish Community Center in the East Columbus said that, it is a serious concern, I think we are waking up to it now.

Portman said that he has had concerns about meddling from the Russian government for years, particularly more recently with Russian government’s interference in the election. He also said that the attorney general needed to let someone else handle the investigation into that.

He also said that, "(Sessions) was involved with the campaign. He did have these contacts that he acknowledges and I think for that reason alone, for appearance purposes, it's better he refuses himself."

Earlier in the day, Senator Sherrod Brown, D - Ohio, said that sessions at the very least needed to return to the Senate Judiciary Committee and to testify again.

Brown said that he believes Sessions lied during his confirmation hearing. He also thinks that he should resign.

He said that, when the Attorney General under the oath is being considered to be the Attorney General, lies to the Senate and more importantly to the American people that is a disqualification for the office.

He said he was not buying Sessions explanation for the discrepancy between his testimony and what was actually happened.

Brown said that, you would remember if you sat down with the Russian ambassador. He has an interesting personality. He has a presence you do not forget and I do not quite get what then-Senator Sessions was trying to do.

There are multiple investigations about the Russian government's relationship with the Trump administration. While the Justice Department is launching its investigation, Portman said that the Senate Intelligence Committee was "pretty far" in its investigation.
