Ohio Lawmaker Propose Two New Airports

A Republican state lawmaker said that the companies have left Ohio because of the drawback to access the air travel. He also said Ohio can bring the back jobs and also more flights by constructing two new regional hub airports, one airport in the southwest and other in the northeast.

The Southwest Ohio Representative Jim Butler wants to build the airports at I-71 near the Xenia and on I-80 just north of the Ravenna.

He also said that Ohio has the population to support the hubs like Dallas/Ft. Worth, but none of the Ohio’s existing airports are within the hour’s drive for 3.5 million people, which he said a regional hub needs to be profitable. Butler admits that it is an expensive project, require about $15 billion.

“We’re not speculative, because the way they’re funded, no money for construction is spent until the airline says we’re going to make this our hub,” Butler said.

Butler also wants to add up the rail service between the major cities and also to the regional airports. He said that the federal money will not be easy to get, but said that he hopes that President Trump will like this idea, as it is a big idea.

The airline industry analyst, Kerry Tan is a professor at the Loyola University in Maryland. He said that with Cleveland, Akron and also Youngstown have already served by the airports, and the money for new airports might be a better spent on infrastructure.

But Representative Butler said that a part of his plan is to ask the airlines to pay for the construction of airports in an exchange for using them as hubs. He also said his plan is still to be worked on and will not be ready until two more years.
