India's goal to become a leader in AI and cloud technology has gotten a new boost. AirTrunk, an Australian data center firm, has revealed its intention to invest 30 billion dollars (about 3 lakh crore rupees) in India over the next four years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that this action will enhance the country's AI and cloud framework while creating fresh opportunities for development and innovation. This announcement occurs as India continues to draw international tech companies that want to establish the necessary infrastructure for the next stage of AI growth. Data centers play an essential role in this plan by offering the computing power needed for AI, cloud services, digital tools, and business operations. AirTrunk mentioned that the funds will be utilized to create 5 gigawatts of new data center capacity in India. The firm, based in Sydney and supported by Blackstone and the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, entered the Indian market earlier this year by acquiring Lumina CloudInfra. Prime Minister Modi welcomed this investment, highlighting its significance for India's expanding digital economy.

"AirTrunk has shared its plan to invest about 3 lakh crore rupees (30 billion dollars) in India and develop 5 GW of data center capacity. This is one of the largest planned investments in the nation’s digital infrastructure," Modi wrote in a message on X. The Prime Minister mentioned that such investments will help reinforce India's status as a global hub for cloud computing and AI while also creating jobs, bolstering local supply chains, and promoting growth driven by innovation. AirTrunk's plans for India come during a time when nations around the world are actively competing for investments in AI. Governments and businesses are pouring money into data centers as the demand for computing power grows quickly with the rise of generative AI technologies. AirTrunk's CEO, Robin Khuda, who met with Prime Minister Modi on Friday, stated that India has emerged as one of the company's key long-term investment locations.

A key takeaway from this week was a clear feeling of urgency. It’s understood that investing in AI is a worldwide competition, and funds will go to regions ready to compete for it, Khuda mentioned. He also pointed out that investors usually seek stability, collaboration, and quick action when assessing markets for major infrastructure ventures. Currently, the company’s ongoing projects in India encompass about 600 megawatts of energy capacity spread across Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. This new funding is anticipated to significantly increase AirTrunk’s presence in India in the next few years. AirTrunk is not alone in placing significant bets on India’s AI future. The nation has become a sought-after location for investments related to artificial intelligence, cloud technology, and digital infrastructure. In October of the previous year, Google revealed its intentions to invest around $15 billion in India between 2026 and 2030. The company stated that this investment would aid in establishing its first AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is expected to feature a large data centre campus aimed at handling the growing need for AI computing.

Indian large companies are also increasing their investments in this field. Earlier this year, Reliance Industries and the Adani Group announced huge financial commitments (ranging from $110 billion to $100 billion) towards AI and data infrastructure projects as the competition heats up in what is seen as the next big area for technological growth. The rise in investments indicates that worldwide tech companies regard India as a long-term market for digital infrastructure. With a vast number of internet users, a growing digital services environment, and increasing demand for AI applications, the country is transforming into a vital center for the infrastructure that supports the contemporary digital economy.
