K Annamalai, the most well-known representative of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, has left the party, putting an end to days of uncertainty. "The National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Hon'ble Shri Nitin Nabin, has approved the resignation given by the former Tamil Nadu State President, Shri K. Annamalai from the main membership of the Party," the BJP announced in a statement today. This news comes just a few hours before Annamalai, the ex-head of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, was set to have an "open, honest conversation" with the public on social media at noon. The 41-year-old leader traveled to Delhi, met with party leader Nitin Nabin on Tuesday, and expressed his desire to part ways on "friendly terms. " He then had a meeting with Amit Shah and BL Santhosh, the person who recognized Annamalai's potential. The party requested that he be patient. Discussions behind the scenes took place afterward. Tamil Nadu BJP leader Nainar Nagendran was summoned to Delhi on Thursday. Another set of discussions started. Today, the resignation was finally accepted.

People close to Annamalai have shared that he is planning to start a movement aimed at finding, training, and developing young leaders throughout Tamil Nadu. They believe this movement could eventually evolve into a political party. He has already established a non-profit leadership program named "We The Leaders," which might form the basis for his larger political aim. An avid supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he resigned from his civil service job and joined the BJP in 2020. Shortly after, he was appointed as the state vice president. A year later, he became the head of the state unit at the age of 37. His reputation grew as the party also made him the election co-in-charge during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, which the BJP ultimately lost.
Reported disagreements grew after the BJP renewed its partnership with AIADMK in preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections. According to sources, Annamalai preferred the BJP to run on its own to broaden its political reach, but the central leadership had different ideas.

Political analysts generally saw his ousting as state president as part of this arrangement, as AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami allegedly demanded changes in leadership as a condition for restoring the alliance. Annamalai did not run in elections. While he is credited with increasing the BJP's vote percentage and visibility in Tamil Nadu, Annamalai has yet to achieve success in elections. He ran unsuccessfully in the 2021 Assembly election and the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
