Mother Mary Angelica, the founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) has died at age 92. The Roman Catholic nun in the US started EWTN, a global media empire in a monastery garage.
She was born Rita Rizzo in a poor family in Ohio. She became famous through her show Mother Angelica. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley paid tribute to her and said that, "She left an indelible mark on Alabama, the Catholic Church and the world as a whole.”
EWTN's chairman, Michael Warsaw said that, "Mother has always, and will always, personify EWTN, the Network which she founded. In the face of sickness and long-suffering trials, Mother's example of joy and prayerful perseverance exemplified the Franciscan spirit she held so dear. We thank God for Mother Angelica and for the gift of her extraordinary life."
She became a nun at age 21 in Cleveland and founded a new monastery near Birmingham in Alabama in 1962.
