University Of Akron Offers New Scholarship

The University of Akron this fall will offer a new scholarship to the incoming freshmen that increases in value as long as they maintain a 2.0 grade point average and progress toward the graduation.

The Akron Guarantee Scholarship program will provide the base scholarship of $500 to $6,500 to each of qualified freshman.

If the student maintains the range of 2.0, or 'C' average, the scholarship increases by $1,500 once they earn 30 credits, and $1,000 after 60 credits and $1,000 after they hit 90 credits.

The program is designed to encourage the students to take 15 credit hours a semester and graduate in four years. President Matthew Wilson instituted a similar scholarship program in the year2015 when he served as dean of the university's law school.

The university said Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor John Carey applauded the program which focuses on completion and reducing the student debt.

Guidelines are the same as for the other UA scholarships for freshmen students:

Various minimum combinations of: 3.0 high school of GPA and 20 ACT or 3.8 high school of GPA and 17 to 19 ACT.

Minimum 12 credits a semester students do not have to apply for scholarships. UA uses application information to determine the scholarships.

The new offer is extended to all the eligible incoming freshmen who were offered a UA General Institutional Scholarship. Approximately half of the admitted freshman will be eligible to receive the scholarship offer.

The university enrolled 3,442 freshmen in the last fall and is aiming to increase that this fall.

The new scholarship does not replace or affect the current scholarships. The entering freshmen who qualify for the traditional General Institutional Academic Scholarship currently receive $2,500 to $8,000 a year and are required to maintain the 2.75 to 3.75 GPA to renew the award.

Those freshmen can choose instead to receive the new Akron Guarantee Scholarship which will result in a slightly smaller first year award but an overall larger award over the four years. They have to maintain only a 2.0 GPA to renew the award.

Additional information is available about the scholarships in uakron.edu/guarantee. The university did not have information on whether the new scholarship will require the additional funds or not .

The officials said that the university has never failed to renew scholarships due to lack of money. Cleveland State University's new freshmen scholarships range from $2,500 to $6,000 a year for the in-state new freshmen. The scholarships are also offered to out-of-state students. scholarships can be renewed if a student maintains a 3.0 GPA and takes 15 credit hours a semester.

Kent State University's new freshmen scholarships on the main campus range from $1,000 to $5,000 a year for the in-state students. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to have the scholarship renewed. Scholarships are also offered to the out-of-state students.
