The United States Customs and Border Protection has introduced a 10 percent tax on all imports that do not have any exemptions. This new rate is lower than the 15 percent tax that US President Donald Trump had previously promised. Following the US Supreme Court's decision, which stated that prior tariffs leader Trump put in place using emergency powers were “not legal,” the President announced the 10 percent extra tax on imports from every country on Friday. The day after, Trump made the choice to raise it to 15 percent. According to a notice from US Customs, aimed at “giving information regarding the Presidential Proclamation on February 20, 2026,” imports will face “an additional 10% rate,” as reported by Reuters. A White House representative, mentioned by The Financial Times, indicated that the shift to 15 percent will happen later on. However, this has not been officially verified. The new taxes began to be collected at midnight, while the previous taxes were canceled.

The US Supreme Court, which has a conservative leaning, decided with a six to three vote that Trump overstepped his power by using a 1977 law to suddenly impose tariffs on certain countries. This resulted in stopping earlier tariffs that ranged from 10 to 50 percent on those countries. After this, Trump added a 10% tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the US President to set new tariffs for up to 150 days on any country to deal with "serious" issues in balance of payments and "fundamental international payments problems," according to Reuters. This time frame can only be extended with a vote from the US Congress. On Monday, Trump criticized the US Supreme Court, claiming that their ruling actually gave him “much more power and strength. ” He stated that he can “use licenses to do absolutely 'terrible' things to foreign nations”.
